Add a breathtaking, ethereal glow to your aquascape with the stunning Albino Congo Tetra. This highly sought-after color morph of the classic Phenacogrammus interruptus brings a unique aesthetic to the freshwater hobby. While traditional Congo Tetras are famous for their bold rainbow iridescence, the albino variety features a striking, semi-translucent pearlescent body, delicate pastel pink and gold undertones, and dramatic, flowing fins that catch the light beautifully. As a larger schooling fish, a group of these active swimmers creates an unforgettable focal point in any heavily planted aquarium.

Place of Origin

The wild ancestors of the Albino Congo Tetra originate from the dense, tropical waters of the Central Congo River Basin in Africa. They typically inhabit quiet, shaded streams, rivers, and marshes characterized by soft, acidic water rich in organic matter. The albino variant offered in the aquarium trade is selectively and sustainably bred in captivity, ensuring hardy genetics, vibrant development, and a seamless acclimation process to home aquariums compared to wild-caught imports.

Tank Size Requirements

Because they are active, fast-swimming fish that reach an adult size of 3 to 3.5 inches, housing them in an appropriate environment is crucial. A minimum tank size of 40 gallons is highly recommended for a proper school. A longer aquarium format (such as a 40-gallon breeder or a standard 55-gallon tank) is far superior to tall setups, providing the vital horizontal swimming space these energetic characins require to display their natural schooling behavior and stunning fin displays.

Environment & Water Parameters

To replicate their natural African river habitat, the ideal aquarium setup should feature a mix of dense perimeter planting and open swimming space. Use live aquarium plants like Anubias, Vallisneria, and Amazon Swords to offer security, while a dark substrate will make their pale, iridescent coloration contrast dramatically. Subtle, diffused lighting or floating plants will help prevent these sensitive fish from startling. They thrive in pristine, well-filtered water with a gentle to moderate current.

  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5

  • Water Hardness: 4 to 15 dGH

Care & Maintenance

Albino Congo Tetras are relatively hardy but are sensitive to fluctuating water quality and elevated nitrate levels. Frequent, regular water changes (about 25-30% weekly) are essential to prevent fin rot and ensure optimal health and majestic fin development. Due to their extended, flowing fins, ensure your aquarium filtration intake is protected or uses a sponge pre-filter to prevent tearing. Keeping them in a proper school is the single best way to reduce stress and boost their immune systems.

Feeding & Diet

In the home aquarium, Albino Congo Tetras are enthusiastic omnivores. To enhance their delicate golden-pink pigmentation and promote vibrant fin growth, provide a diverse diet. They thrive on high-quality staple foods like floating tropical flakes and micro-pellets. Supplement their diet regularly with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and Mysis shrimp. Feeding them a varied, nutrient-dense diet ensures they receive the necessary carotenoids to maintain their pearlescent luster.

Tank Mates & Compatibility

The Albino Congo Tetra is an exceptionally peaceful community fish, but its active nature and size can intimidate timid tank mates. They must be kept in a school of at least 6 to 8 individuals; smaller groups lead to extreme shyness and stress. Excellent tank mates include other peaceful African characins, larger tetras (like Bleeding Heart or Diamond Tetras), peaceful cichlids (such as Kribensis or Ram Cichlids), Corydoras catfish, and peaceful Loricariids (Plecos). Avoid housing them with notorious fin-nippers like Tiger Barbs, as well as hyper-aggressive species or fish small enough to be viewed as food.

Breeding the Albino Congo Tetra

Breeding the Albino Congo Tetra can be challenging but rewarding for dedicated hobbyists. They are egg-scatterers that provide no parental care. A separate breeding tank equipped with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.2–6.5), dim lighting, and plenty of spawning mops or fine-leaved plants (like Java Moss) is required. Condition a select pair or a small group with premium live foods before moving them to the breeding setup. Spawning typically occurs in the early morning light, during which the female can scatter up to 300 eggs. Remove the adults immediately after spawning to prevent them from consuming the eggs. The eggs hatch in approximately 6 days, and the fry must be fed infusoria or freshly hatched brine shrimp once they become free-swimming.
