Add a touch of sunshine to your aquarium with the Golden Dwarf Barb. Often overlooked but deeply rewarding, these diminutive cyprinids are perfect for aquarists who appreciate subtle beauty and active, peaceful behavior. With their translucent, honey-gold bodies and delicate black markings, they provide a sophisticated "twinkle" effect as they school through a planted landscape.

Quick Stats & Origin

  • Scientific Name: Pethia gelius (formerly Puntius gelius)

  • Origin: Native to the standing waters and slow-moving rivers of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

  • Adult Size: Exceptionally small, reaching only 1–1.5 inches.

  • Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care.

Care & Environment

Golden Dwarf Barbs are peaceful and relatively hardy, provided their water quality remains stable. Because they are smaller and more timid than their larger cousins (like Tiger Barbs), they require a calm environment to truly thrive.

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 to 15 gallons is ideal. While they are tiny, they are active swimmers and need horizontal room for schooling.

  • Substrate: A dark, fine substrate like sand or aqua-soil will make their golden coloration and iridescent scales stand out significantly.

  • Environment: These fish are perfect for planted tanks. They appreciate the security provided by dense vegetation like Rotala, Vallisneria, and floating plants. Open swimming space in the center of the tank is also important.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 68°F to 77°F (20°C–25°C). They prefer slightly cooler "sub-tropical" temperatures.

    • pH: 6.0–7.5.

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard.

Feeding & Diet

As omnivores, Golden Dwarf Barbs are not picky, but their small mouths require appropriately sized food.

  • Daily Diet: High-quality micro-pellets or crushed tropical flakes.

  • Color & Health: Supplement with live or frozen "nano" foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or cyclops.

  • Grazing: They will occasionally pick at biofilm and fine algae, helping keep your plant leaves clean.

Tank Mates

The Golden Dwarf Barb is one of the most peaceful barbs available and is completely non-aggressive.

  • Ideal Partners: Other peaceful nano fish like Celestial Pearl Danios, Ember Tetras, Neon Tetras, and Honey Gouramis. They are also excellent companions for ornamental shrimp and snails.

  • Social Needs: They must be kept in a group of 6 or more. In smaller numbers, they can become shy and will spend most of their time hiding.

  • Avoid: Large, fast-moving, or aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food or view them as prey.

Breeding

Breeding Golden Dwarf Barbs is achievable for the dedicated hobbyist.

  • Setup: They are egg-scatterers. A separate breeding tank with a mesh floor or a thick carpet of Java Moss is necessary to prevent the parents from eating the eggs.

  • Conditioning: Feed the parents high-protein live foods for a week before moving them to the breeding tank.

  • Fry Care: Eggs hatch in about 24–48 hours. The fry are microscopic and require infusoria or paramecium as their first food before graduating to "golden pearls" or vinegar eels.

Aquarist Tip: Because they prefer slightly cooler water than many tropical fish, they make excellent tank mates for White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Neocaridina shrimp in unheated indoor setups!
