Add a streak of high-energy color to your aquarium with the Burmese Fireline Danio. This stunning, fast-moving cyprinid is famous for the glowing orange-gold "fireline" that runs horizontally along its sleek, iridescent body. Perfect for hobbyists who love a dynamic display, these danios stay in constant motion, creating a shimmering effect as they dart through the upper levels of the water column.
Quick Stats & Origin
-
Scientific Name: Devario sondhii
-
Origin: Native to the clear, fast-flowing hill streams of Myanmar (Burma).
-
Adult Size: Approximately 2–2.5 inches.
-
Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care.
Care & Environment
Burmese Fireline Danios are incredibly hardy and are an excellent choice for both beginners and seasoned aquarists. Because they originate from running water, they appreciate a setup with plenty of oxygen and a bit of movement.
-
Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is required. While the fish are small, they are "marathon swimmers" and need a long tank (at least 24–30 inches) to accommodate their active nature.
-
Water Movement: They thrive with a moderate powerhead or a strong filter return to simulate their natural stream habitat.
-
Decor: Use a mix of river stones, driftwood, and hardy plants. They look most impressive against a dark substrate, which makes their golden "fireline" stand out.
-
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 70°F to 78°F (21°C–26°C).
-
pH: 6.5–7.5.
-
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard.
-
Feeding & Diet
These danios are unfussy omnivores and will accept almost anything offered at the surface.
-
Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or small floating pellets.
-
Protein Boost: To enhance their golden luster, provide frozen or live treats such as daphnia, brine shrimp, or bloodworms.
-
Feeding Habit: They are surface feeders, so ensure you provide food that stays afloat or sinks slowly.
Tank Mates
Burmese Fireline Danios are peaceful community fish, but their speed can sometimes intimidate very shy species.
-
Ideal Partners: Other active fish like Rasboras, smaller Barbs, Tetras, and Corydoras. They also share space well with peaceful bottom-dwellers like Loaches.
-
Social Needs: They must be kept in schools of 6 or more. In larger groups, they feel secure and exhibit much more natural, playful behavior.
-
Avoid: Large, predatory fish or extremely slow-moving, long-finned fish (like Bettas) that might be stressed by the Danios' high energy.
Breeding
Like most Devario species, the Fireline Danio is an egg-scatterer.
-
Setup: Use a separate breeding tank with a "marble" substrate or a spawning mesh to prevent the parents from eating the eggs.
-
Trigger: A slight temperature increase followed by a large water change often triggers spawning in the morning.
-
Fry Care: Once eggs are laid, remove the adults. The fry hatch in about 24–36 hours and will require infusoria or liquid fry food until they are large enough to take baby brine shrimp.
Pro Tip: Keep a tight lid on your aquarium! Burmese Fireline Danios are powerful jumpers and can easily find small gaps when they are in a playful mood.
