Add a bold splash of color and high-energy movement to your aquarium with the Jade Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona). Also known as the Green Tiger Barb, this stunning color morph features deep, iridescent emerald-green scales that shimmer under aquarium lighting. Known for their playful "pecking order" and active schooling behavior, Jade Tiger Barbs are a favorite for hobbyists looking to create a dynamic and visually captivating freshwater display.

Place of Origin

The Tiger Barb species is native to the tropical waters of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia. While the classic "striped" version is found in the wild, the Jade or Green Tiger Barb is a selectively bred variety developed to enhance the iridescent green sheen across the fish's entire body, while maintaining the characteristic orange-tipped fins.

Care Level & Environment

  • Care Level: Easy. They are exceptionally hardy and adaptable, making them perfect for both beginners and experienced keepers.

  • Water Conditions: They thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water with a moderate flow.

    • Temperature: 72°F - 82°F (22°C - 28°C)

    • pH: 6.0 - 7.5

    • Hardness: 5 - 19 dGH

  • Aquarium Setup: To see the best colors from your Jade Tiger Barbs, use a dark substrate and provide a backdrop of live aquarium plants. They appreciate a mix of open swimming space in the center and driftwood or rockwork along the edges for security.

Tank Size

Jade Tiger Barbs are fast, muscular swimmers that require ample horizontal space.

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 to 30 gallons for a small school.

  • Schooling Requirements: This is a highly social species that must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10. Keeping them in a proper school significantly reduces aggression and fin-nipping, as they focus their energy on interacting with each other rather than their tank mates.

Diet & Feeding

The Jade Tiger Barb is a classic omnivore with a voracious appetite.

  • Staple Diet: High-quality tropical flakes or color-enhancing sinking pellets.

  • Live/Frozen Foods: They greatly benefit from variety; offer brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to boost their immune system and enhance their green luster.

  • Vegetable Matter: They will also appreciate occasional spirulina flakes or blanched zucchini to round out their nutrition.

Tank Mates

While energetic, Jade Tiger Barbs can be "nippy" if kept in too small a group or with the wrong companions.

  • Ideal Tank Mates: Fast-moving fish like Zebra Danios, Rosy Barbs, larger Tetras, Corydoras catfish, and Clown Loaches.

  • Avoid: Slow-moving fish with long, flowing fins (such as Angelfish, Bettas, or Guppies), as the Barbs may be tempted to nip at them.

  • Compatibility Tip: Always keep them in a large enough school to ensure they "play" amongst themselves.

Breeding Jade Tiger Barbs

Breeding this species is relatively straightforward for the home hobbyist.

  1. Preparation: Condition a pair or a small group with high-quality live foods.

  2. Spawning Tank: Use a separate tank with soft water and a "spawning mat" or a layer of marbles on the bottom. Tiger Barbs are egg-scatterers and do not provide parental care.

  3. Egg Safety: Adult fish should be removed immediately after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs.

  4. Fry Development: Eggs typically hatch within 48 hours. Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed infusoria or freshly hatched brine shrimp.
