Add a splash of vibrant color and a ton of personality to your tank with the Lemon Oscar. This stunning color morph of the classic Oscar fish is prized for its bright yellow hue, which stands out beautifully against lush green plants or dark substrates. Often described as "water puppies," Lemon Oscars are highly intelligent and known for recognizing their owners and even begging for food.

Quick Stats & Origin

  • Scientific Name: Astronotus ocellatus

  • Origin: The wild ancestors of the Oscar are native to the Amazon River Basin in South America. The "Lemon" variety is a selectively bred captive color morph.

  • Adult Size: Typically 10–14 inches.

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years with excellent care.

Care & Environment

Lemon Oscars are hardy but require a dedicated owner due to their size and the amount of waste they produce. High-quality filtration and consistent water changes are mandatory to prevent "Hole in the Head" disease and keep nitrate levels low.

  • Tank Size: A single Lemon Oscar requires a minimum of 75 gallons, though a 125-gallon tank or larger is highly recommended if you plan to keep a pair or tank mates.

  • Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel is best. Oscars love to "redecorate" by moving substrate around in their mouths.

  • Decor: Use heavy rocks, large pieces of driftwood, and secure any equipment (like heaters). They are known to knock over decor and may uproot live plants.

  • Water Parameters: * Temperature: 74°F to 80°F (23°C–27°C)

    • pH: 6.0–7.5

    • Hardness: Soft to medium-hard.

Feeding & Diet

Oscars are opportunistic carnivores with a big appetite. A varied diet is key to maintaining their vibrant yellow color.

  • Staple Diet: High-quality Cichlid pellets or sticks formulated for large South American species.

  • Protein Boost: Occasional treats of frozen krill, bloodworms, or earthworms.

  • Avoid: Feeder fish from stores, which often carry diseases and lack proper nutrition.

Tank Mates

Because Lemon Oscars are large and can be territorial, choose companions carefully.

  • Ideal Partners: Other large South American cichlids (like Severums or Jack Dempseys), Silver Dollars, Tinfoil Barbs, or large Plecos.

  • Avoid: Any fish small enough to fit in the Oscar's mouth—it will eventually become a snack.

Breeding

Breeding Lemon Oscars can be rewarding but requires a massive amount of space.

  • Pairing: They are difficult to sex visually; usually, a group is raised together until a pair forms naturally.

  • Spawning: Once a pair bonds, they will clean a flat rock or the tank bottom to lay hundreds of eggs.

  • Parental Care: Both parents are fiercely protective of their fry. Be prepared with a separate nursery tank and plenty of brine shrimp for the babies.

Note: Lemon Oscars are high-bioload fish. Ensure your filter is rated for at least twice the size of your aquarium to keep the water crystal clear.
