Full Care & Profile Breakdown

Place of Origin

The Loreto Tetra is native to South America, specifically collected from the slow-moving rivers, blackwater streams, and densely vegetated tributaries of the upper Amazon River basin in the Loreto region of Peru.

Aquarium Environment & Setup

To see your Loreto Tetras thrive and display their best colors, aim to replicate their native blackwater home:

  • Substrate: A soft, fine sand substrate is ideal.

  • Decor & Structure: Incorporate plenty of driftwood branches, tangled roots, and dried leaf litter (like Indian Almond leaves), which release beneficial tannins that naturally soften and stain the water.

  • Plants & Lighting: Use dense live plants such as Java Fern, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne. Add floating plants (like Salvinia or Amazon Frogbit) to diffuse the light. Subdued, dim aquarium lighting makes these timid fish feel safe and vastly reduces their stress.

Minimum Tank Size

While they are a dwarf species, they are active swimmers that need plenty of horizontal space to school. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is required for a small group, though a 20-gallon long tank is highly recommended to appreciate their natural social behavior.

Diet and Feeding

Loreto Tetras are small omnivores/micro-predators with tiny mouths. To maintain vibrant coloration and premium health, offer a varied diet of:

  • Staple: High-quality micro pellets, crushed tropical flakes, or spirulina flakes.

  • Protein Boosts: Regular feedings of live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms, and finely chopped bloodworms.

Temperament & Ideal Tank Mates

These are exceptionally peaceful, gregarious schooling fish. They must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 individuals; keeping them in larger numbers prevents them from becoming timid and drastically reduces stress.

  • Great Tank Mates: Other small, non-aggressive nano fish such as Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Corydoras catfish, Otocinclus, Kuhli loaches, and dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma.

  • Avoid: Large, fast-moving, or predatory fish (like Angelfish or large barbs) that might mistake these tiny tetras for a snack.

Breeding Protocol

Breeding Hyphessobrycon loretoensis in captivity is a rewarding challenge. They are egg-scatterers that exhibit no parental care:

  1. Set up a separate, dim breeding tank with very soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.0) and a temperature around 78°F.

  2. Fill the tank with dense clumps of Java Moss or spawning mops to catch the eggs.

  3. Condition a pair or a small group with premium live foods before introducing them to the breeding tank.

  4. Once spawning occurs, remove the adults immediately, as they will eat their own eggs. Eggs hatch in 24 to 36 hours, and the microscopic fry can be raised on infusoria or powdered fry food until they are large enough to accept baby brine shrimp.
