Bring the vibrant beauty of the Southern Hemisphere into your home with the stunning Australian Rainbowfish. Known for their dazzling iridescent scales, active schooling nature, and peaceful temperament, these popular freshwater aquarium fish are a top choice for both beginner and experienced hobbyists looking to elevate their planted community tanks.

Key Care & Habitat Guidelines

  • Place of Origin: Native to the slow-moving streams, rivers, and rainforest creeks of northern and eastern Australia, as well as New Guinea.

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a small school, as these active swimmers require plenty of open horizontal swimming space.

  • Water Environment: Thrives in a tropical freshwater setup with a temperature range of 72°F to 82°F, a pH level of 7.0 to 8.0, and moderate water hardness. High water quality and gentle filtration are essential.

  • Tank Mates: Highly peaceful and community-friendly. Excellent tank mates include other peaceful rainbowfish species, tetras, barbs, Corydoras catfish, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. Avoid very slow-moving or long-finned fish that might get nipped during feeding frenzies.

  • Diet & Feeding: An omnivorous and enthusiastic eater. Provide a varied diet of high-quality tropical flakes, micro-pellets, and protein-rich live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to bring out their best coloration.

  • Breeding: Egg scatterers that readily spawn in dense aquarium plants (like Java moss) or spawning mops when conditioned with live foods. Adults do not guard their eggs, so parents should be removed or eggs transferred to a separate rearing tank.
