Add a burst of vibrant color to your aquarium with the stunning Blonde Red Tuxedo Guppy. Known for its striking contrast, this selectively bred variety features a beautiful light "blonde" body paired with a dark, iridescent half-black "tuxedo" pattern that blends into a fiery red tail and dorsal fin. This peaceful, energetic fish is an absolute favorite for both beginner aquarists and experienced breeders alike.
Place of Origin
While wild guppies originate from the tropical waters of South America (including Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana), the Blonde Red Tuxedo Guppy is a highly refined color morph developed through decades of selective captive breeding by expert fish farms.
Care & Level of Difficulty
-
Care Level: Easy / Beginner-Friendly
-
Water Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C)
-
pH Range: 7.0 to 8.5 (Prefers slightly alkaline water)
-
Water Hardness: 10 to 30 dGH (Prefers hard water with high mineral content)
Guppies are incredibly hardy fish, making them a great choice for newcomers to the hobby. Keeping up with regular water changes and maintaining a stable temperature are the keys to keeping their fins vibrant and healthy.
Ideal Tank Size
We recommend a minimum tank size of 10 gallons for a small group of guppies. While they can survive in smaller micro-tanks, a larger volume of water helps stabilize water parameters and provides plenty of swimming room for their active personalities.
Diet & Feeding
The Blonde Red Tuxedo Guppy is an omnivore and a highly enthusiastic eater. For optimal color development and vitality, feed them a varied diet consisting of high-quality tropical flake food, micro-pellets, and freeze-dried or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They also benefit from vegetable-based flakes containing spirulina to support their immune systems.
Aquarium Environment & Setup
To truly make their fiery red tails pop, house your guppies in a planted aquarium with a dark substrate. They thrive in environments with plenty of live plants (such as Java Fern, Anubias, and Water Wisteria) which offer hiding spots for fry and females. Ensure moderate water flow and filtration, as excessively strong currents can exhaust their long, flowing fins.
Compatible Tank Mates
These guppies are incredibly peaceful community fish. Ideal tank mates include other small, non-aggressive species such as Neon Tetras, Corydoras Catfish, Harlequin Rasboras, Platies, Mollies, and peaceful invertebrates like Cherry Shrimp and Mystery Snails. Avoid housing them with notorious fin-nippers like Tiger Barbs or large predatory fish that might mistake them for a snack.
Breeding the Blonde Red Tuxedo Guppy
Guppies are legendary livebearers, meaning females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs.
-
The Ratio: Always maintain a ratio of at least 2 to 3 females for every 1 male to distribute the male's constant attention and reduce stress on the females.
-
Saving the Fry: Gestation lasts roughly 26 to 30 days. If you wish to raise the babies, provide dense floating plants (like Hornwort or Guppy Grass) or utilize a breeding box, as adult guppies will naturally prey on their own fry. Feed the newborns crushed flakes or live baby brine shrimp for rapid growth.
