Tank Size & Environment Setup A minimum tank size of 15 to 20 gallons is recommended. As a active schooling fish, keep them in groups of 6 or more (8–10 is ideal) to prevent stress and observe natural group dynamics. Recreate their natural habitat with heavy live aquatic plants (such as Java Fern, Anubias, and Amazon Swords), dark substrate, driftwood, and gentle water flow.

Diet & Feeding As omnivores, Candy Cane Tetras are unpicky eaters. Feed a balanced diet consisting of high-quality tropical micro-pellets, high-protein flakes, and occasional live or frozen treats like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms to enhance their natural red hues.

Ideal Tank Mates Peaceful and non-aggressive, they pair well with other peaceful community fish, including small rasboras, Corydoras catfish, peaceful dwarf cichlids (like Apistogrammas), Otocinclus, and small gouramis. Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive species or known fin-nippers.

Breeding Egg-scatterers by nature, breeding requires a dedicated breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants (like Java Moss), and low lighting. Parents should be removed post-spawning to protect the eggs, which hatch in about 24–36 hours.
