Tank Requirements & Environment

Decorate the aquarium with dense live or artificial plants around the perimeter while leaving plenty of open swimming space in the center. Dark substrates, driftwood, and floating plants mimic their natural blackwater habitat and intensify their fiery red coloration.

Feeding & Diet

As omnivores with healthy appetites, Columbian Red Blue Tetras are easy to feed. Offer a high-quality staple diet of high-protein flakes or slow-sinking micro-pellets. To promote vibrant color and optimal health, supplement their diet regularly with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

Tank Mates

These tetras are generally peaceful, but their robust size and energetic swimming style mean they fit best with other active community fish. Great tank mates include medium-sized tetras, rasboras, gouramis, peaceful cichlids (such as rams or dwarf cichlids), corydoras catfish, and plecos. Avoid keeping them with long-finned or slow-moving fish (like male guppies or bettas), as energetic tetras can occasionally nip fins if kept in too small a group.

Breeding

Columbian Tetras are egg scatterers and relatively easy to breed in captivity. Set up a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water, dim lighting, and fine-leaved plants like Java Moss or spawning mops. Condition the breeding pair with live foods. Once spawning occurs, remove the adults immediately to prevent them from eating the eggs. Fry will hatch in 24 to 36 hours and require infusoria or liquid fry food before moving to baby brine shrimp.
