The Head and Tail Light Tetra (Hemigrammus ocellifer) is a classic, peaceful schooling fish native to the freshwater rivers, streams, and flooded forest basins of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. Recognized for its metallic silvery body and iridescent copper-gold spots on the head and caudal peduncle that shine like tiny headlights, this popular nano fish brings subtle elegance and active movement to any freshwater setup.

Care Level & Environment

Head and Tail Light Tetras are hardy, adaptable, and ideal for both beginner and experienced fishkeepers. To mirror their natural South American blackwater habitat, keep them in an aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water, dense aquatic vegetation, smooth driftwood, and a dark substrate to make their glowing colors pop. Moderate water flow and soft, diffused lighting will help them feel secure and exhibit their best behavior.

Tank Size & Tank Mates

  • Minimum Tank Size: 15 to 20 gallons.

  • Schooling Requirements: Keep in a group of at least 6 to 10 individuals to reduce stress and prevent shy behavior.

  • Compatible Tank Mates: Peaceful community species such as Corydoras catfish, Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Dwarf Gouramis, Bristlenose Plecos, and peaceful freshwater shrimp. Avoid large or aggressive cichlids that may view them as food.

Diet & Feeding

An omnivorous species, the Head and Tail Light Tetra is an easy feeder. Offer a balanced diet of high-quality micro granules or crushed tropical flakes as a daily staple. Supplement regularly with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp to enhance their natural coloration and support optimal health.

Breeding Information

Head and Tail Light Tetras are egg scatterers. To breed them, set up a separate 10-gallon spawning tank with soft water (pH 6.0–6.5), warm temperatures (78°F–80°F), and fine-leaved plants like Java Moss or a spawning mop. Condition a pair or small group with live foods before introducing them to the breeding tank. Spawning usually occurs at dawn. Once eggs are laid, immediately remove the adult fish to prevent them from eating the eggs. Eggs hatch in approximately 24 to 36 hours, and fry become free-swimming a few days later, requiring infusoria or liquid fry food initially before transitioning to baby brine shrimp.
