The Hikari Danio originates from the clear, fast-flowing hill streams and river drainages of southern Myanmar (Burma)—including the Tanintharyi, Dawei, and Lenya river basins. In the wild, they inhabit pristine, oxygen-rich waters bordered by lush marginal vegetation, gravel-and-pebble stream beds, and gentle-to-moderate currents.

Minimum Tank Size & Environment Setup

• Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons (long tank preferred). Because Danios are swift, active swimmers that sprint in groups, horizontal swimming length is far more important than vertical height.

• Aquascaping: A planted aquarium with aquatic plants along the back and sides provides natural shelter and shade, while keeping the center open for free-swimming schools. Dark substrate, smooth river stones, and driftwood roots will make their blue and yellow metallic tones pop.

• Tank Cover: A tight-fitting aquarium lid or canopy is essential. Like all Danios, they are agile jumpers when startled or playing near the water's surface.

Feeding & Diet

As natural omnivores, Hikari Danios are unfussy, eager eaters. Feed them 1 to 2 times daily with a diverse diet to support immune health and vibrant coloration:

• Staple Diet: High-quality micro-pellets, slow-sinking granules, and premium spirulina flake foods.

• Treats & Conditioning: Live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworms.

Hikari Danios are peaceful community fish that thrive when kept in schools of at least 6 to 8 individuals (a balanced mix of males and females encourages optimal schooling behavior and intense color displays).

Great Companions Include:

• Small peaceful tetras, rasboras, and other danio species

• Bottom dwellers such as cory catfish, kuhli loaches, and otocinclus

• Peaceful dwarf cichlids, dwarf gouramis, and freshwater ornamental snails/shrimp

• Avoid: Large, predatory fish or slow-moving, long-finned species, which can be stressed by the danios' fast-paced swimming.

Breeding Information

Hikari Blue and Yellow Danios are egg-scatterers and breed readily.

• Condition potential breeders in a separate tank with nutrient-dense live and frozen foods.

• Set up a shallow breeding tank equipped with fine-leaved plants or a mesh/marble bottom to protect fallen eggs from being eaten by adult fish.

• Spawning typically occurs in the morning light. Once eggs are scattered, immediately remove the parents. Eggs typically hatch within 48 to 72 hours, and fry can be fed infusoria followed by newly hatched brine shrimp once they are free-swimming.
