Lisas Rainbow Guppies are sold as a pair, 1 male and 1 female.

Add a kaleidoscopic burst of life to your aquarium with the Fancy Guppy. Perhaps the most recognizable and beloved freshwater fish in the world, Guppies are the ultimate choice for both first-time keepers and seasoned hobbyists. Available in a staggering array of colors, patterns, and tail shapes—from fiery reds and electric blues to intricate snakeskin and leopard patterns—there is a Guppy to suit every aesthetic.

Quick Stats & Origin

  • Scientific Name: Poecilia reticulata

  • Origin: Native to the warm, tropical waters of South America (specifically Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana) and the Caribbean.

  • Adult Size: Males (1.5 inches), Females (2–2.5 inches).

  • Lifespan: 2–3 years.

Care & Environment

Guppies are famously hardy and adaptable, making them the "gold standard" for beginner-friendly fish. They are active, curious, and spend most of their time exploring the middle and upper layers of the tank.

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group. Larger tanks are easier to maintain as Guppies are active and have a high reproductive rate.

  • Substrate & Decor: They look best against a dark substrate with a mix of live plants (like Java Fern or Anubias) and driftwood. Plants provide essential cover for females and hiding spots for fry.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C–28°C).

    • pH: 6.8–7.8 (They prefer slightly alkaline, "hard" water).

    • Hardness: 8–12 dGH.

Feeding & Diet

Guppies are enthusiastic omnivores and will accept almost any food offered. To maintain their neon-bright colors and long, flowing fins, a varied diet is essential.

  • Daily Diet: High-quality tropical flakes or micro-pellets.

  • Protein Boost: Occasional treats of frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia.

  • Vegetable Matter: They will graze on algae within the tank and appreciate spirulina-enriched flakes.

Tank Mates

Guppies are peaceful community fish and thrive alongside other non-aggressive species.

  • Ideal Partners: Mollies, Platies, Swordtails, Corydoras, Neon Tetras, and Dwarf Gouramis. They are also excellent companions for ornamental snails and shrimp.

  • Social Ratio: To ensure a healthy environment, it is best to keep them in a ratio of one male to every two or three females. This prevents the males from overwhelming the females with constant attention.

  • Avoid: Large, aggressive fish (like Oscars) or notorious fin-nippers (like Tiger Barbs) that may shred the males' delicate tails.

Breeding

Guppies are known as "Million Fish" because of how easily and frequently they breed.

  • Livebearers: Unlike egg-layers, Guppies give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry. A single female can produce a brood every 30 days.

  • Fry Survival: To keep the babies safe from adult fish, provide dense clumps of floating plants like Guppy Grass, Hornwort, or Java Moss.

  • Selective Breeding: Because they breed so readily, many hobbyists enjoy the challenge of crossing different strains to create unique color patterns and tail shapes.

Pro Tip: While Guppies are hardy, they are sensitive to sudden changes in water quality. Regular weekly water changes of 10–20% will keep their colors vivid and their immune systems strong.
