Quick Stats
-
Scientific Name: Pseudomugil luminatus (formerly associated with P. paskai)
-
Care Level: Easy to Intermediate
-
Temperament: Peaceful, active, and social
-
Lifespan: 2 to 3 years
-
Max Size: 1.2 to 1.5 inches
Place of Origin
The Paskai Blue Eye is native to the swampy forest streams and slow-moving tributaries of Papua New Guinea and parts of Indonesia. They are typically found in shallow, heavily vegetated waters with high tannin content and soft, acidic conditions.
Ideal Environment & Tank Size
Due to their small size and active swimming habits, a minimum tank size of 10 to 15 gallons is recommended. These are schooling fish and must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 to showcase their natural behavior and encourage the males to display their best colors.
-
Substrate & Decor: They look most brilliant in a heavily planted aquarium with a dark substrate. Use floating plants like Red Root Floaters or Frogbit to provide the dappled lighting they prefer.
-
Water Flow: They enjoy a gentle to moderate current that mimics their natural stream habitats.
-
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72°F to 82°F
-
pH: 6.5 – 7.5
-
Hardness: 5–15 dGH
-
Feeding & Diet
The Paskai Blue Eye is an omnivore with a preference for small meaty foods. Because they have tiny mouths, food size is key.
-
Primary Diet: High-quality crushed flakes, micro-pellets, or specialized nano-fish foods.
-
Conditioning: For maximum "neon" glow, supplement their diet with live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or cyclops.
Compatible Tank Mates
These are exceptionally peaceful aquarium fish and are perfect for community nano tanks.
-
Best Mates: Other Blue Eyes (Pseudomugil species), Chili Rasboras, Celestial Pearl Danios, and Sparkling Gouramis. They are also generally safe with adult freshwater shrimp (Neocaridina), though they may snack on very small shrimplets.
-
Avoid: Large, boisterous, or aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food or stress these delicate beauties.
Breeding the Paskai Blue Eye
Breeding Pseudomugil luminatus is a fascinating process for hobbyists.
-
Preparation: Provide fine-leafed plants like Java Moss or a spawning mop.
-
Spawning: They are continuous spawners, meaning the female will lay a few eggs every day among the plants or mop over several days.
-
Care: The parents generally do not eat their eggs, but for the best yield, it is recommended to move the spawning mop to a separate hatching tank.
-
Fry: Eggs hatch in about 10–12 days. The fry are tiny and will require infusoria or liquid fry food before graduating to freshly hatched baby brine shrimp.
