While wild Oscar cichlids originate from the slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and basins of the Amazon River in South America (Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and Bolivia), the Snow White Albino Oscar is a captive-bred selective color morph. Selective breeding isolated the leucistic and albino traits, resulting in a pristine, solid-white body devoid of dark tiger striping or orange patterning.

Care & Maintenance

Oscars are famously hardy, but due to their large size and high waste production, heavy filtration is essential. A combination of canister filters and strong mechanical/biological filtration will keep ammonia and nitrate levels under control. Weekly water changes of 30% to 50% are strongly recommended to prevent health issues like Hole-in-the-Head (HITH) disease. High water quality and stable parameters are the key to maintaining their vibrant white sheen.

Minimum Tank Size

Oscars are natural "aquascapers" that love to dig in substrate and move objects around.

• Decor: Heavy driftwood, large rocks, and secure caves. Ensure all hardscape is stable so the fish cannot knock items over against the glass.

• Plants: Real live plants will likely be uprooted or destroyed. Opt for sturdy silk artificial plants anchored securely, or attach hardy plants like Anubias and Java Fern to high driftwood out of reach.

• Equipment Safety: Protect heater glass with a heater guard, as mature Oscars can shatter submerged glass equipment.

Ideal Tank Mates

Snow White Albino Oscars are semi-aggressive and territorial, but they generally interact well with fish too large to be swallowed. Avoid housing them with small community fish like tetras or guppies.

• Great Tank Mates: Silver Dollars, Plecostomus (Plecos), Severums, Jack Dempseys, Firemouth Cichlids, Geophagus, and large catfish (e.g., Featherfin or Synodontis species).

Breeding Information

Breeding Snow White Albino Oscars in captivity is achievable with a established, sexually mature pair (around 12 to 18 months of age).

• Pairing: Oscars form monogamous pairs. It is best to raise a group of juveniles together and allow them to pair off naturally.

• Spawning Process: Provide a flat stone or tile for egg deposition. The female can lay up to 1,000–3,000 eggs. Both parents guard the nest aggressively, displaying intense parental care.

• Fry Care: Eggs hatch in 3 to 4 days, and fry become free-swimming within a week. Feed newborn fry baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and finely crushed cichlid flakes.
