Add a splash of lively energy to your nano aquarium setup with the Tail Spot Pygmy Corydora (Corydoras hastatus), also popularly known as the Dwarf Catfish or Hastatus Cory. Unlike traditional bottom-dwelling corys, these charming, peaceful freshwater fish are unique because they love to school in the mid-water levels of your tank. Maxing out at just about 1 inch in size, they are the ultimate choice for nano tank enthusiasts looking for an active, social, and easy-to-care-for species.

Place of Origin

The Tail Spot Pygmy Corydora is native to the slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and dense creeks of South America, specifically within the Amazon River basin, Paraguay River basin, and the Pantanal wetlands in Brazil and Argentina.

Aquarium Environment & Decor

Replicating their natural environment is key to keeping your Corydoras hastatus happy and healthy.

  • Substrate: A soft, fine sand substrate is highly recommended. Their delicate barbels (whisker-like sensory organs) can easily be damaged or infected by sharp gravel.

  • Aquascape: Provide plenty of cover using live aquarium plants like Java Fern, Anubias, and floating vegetation to diffuse bright lighting. Adding driftwood and leaf litter (such as Indian Almond Leaves) mimics their native blackwater habitats, releasing beneficial tannins into the water.

  • Water Flow: They prefer gentle to moderate water movement, so ensure your filter intake isn't creating an overwhelming current for these tiny swimmers.

Diet & Feeding

As opportunistic omnivores, these miniature catfish are not picky eaters, but because they have very tiny mouths, they require micro-sized foods. Feed them a varied diet of high-quality sinking nano pellets, crushed tropical flakes, and powdered foods. They will absolutely thrive if supplemented with live or frozen treats such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and micro-worms. Because they actively swim in the mid-water columns, ensure that food lingers in the water column long enough for them to feed before it settles entirely.

Ideal Tank Mates

The Tail Spot Pygmy Corydora is exceptionally peaceful and should never be housed with aggressive or large predatory fish. They are highly social schooling fish and must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 individuals; smaller numbers will cause them stress.

  • Excellent choices include: Small rasboras, neon tetras, ember tetras, guppies, hatchetfish, and dwarf shrimp (such as Cherry Shrimp or Amano Shrimp).

Breeding the Hastatus Cory

Breeding Corydoras hastatus in a home aquarium is a rewarding project for hobbyists. To trigger spawning, feed the breeding group a high-protein diet of live foods alongside a slight water change using slightly cooler, soft water to simulate the South American rainy season.

Females will carry a few eggs at a time in their pelvic fins, depositing them carefully onto clean plant leaves (like Java Moss) or the aquarium glass. Because adult corys may eat their own eggs and fry, it is best to move the adults out of the breeding tank once spawning is complete, or gently harvest the eggs into a separate rearing container. The tiny fry hatch in 3 to 5 days and can be raised on infusoria and freshly hatched brine shrimp.
