Trapdoor Snails (Viviparis Malleatus) are freshwater snails that are non-aggressive and unique looking algae eaters. They tolerate wide ranges of water temperatures and a preferred species of snails for pond keepers. These little scavengers do a great job consuming algae, dead plant material and excess fish food in your aquarium and/or pond.
Not only are these beautiful snails, but they keep your aquarium tidy and help keep algae under control. They're natures gift to fish keepers.
Sizes will vary depending on age, but you can expect an approximate size of 1-2 inches.
My order of 3 trapdoor snails was very well packaged and arrived on time.
Actually I was on my way out to an appointment when the delivery truck pulled up. Being on a hurry I just did a “plop and drop” into my tank and left the house. When I got home I noticed one of the three was sort of hanging out of its shell whereas the other two were exploring the tank. I decided to give it more time but the next morning it was the same situation and it never did recover
I consider this my fault because I should have inspected them while still in the shipping bag and taken a picture of it at that time. Also, I probably should have left them in the shipping box and waited to open it when I got back home. I then could have done a proper acclimation before putting them in my tank. Maybe that one snail was in a weakened state from shipping and couldn’t handle the sudden change in water parameters.
But I’ll be back and order again as I need some other types. Thanks.
I bought four of these gorgeous creatures. Mine are more blue than the green represented in the shop photos, but I don’t mind at all….still beautiful! I might get a few more just because. They arrived in double sealed clear bags and immediately took to exploring after acclimating them to my water temp.
Arrived alive and healthy. Once introduced into the tank settled in quickly and started to clear algae. Very happy would definitely recommend for algae cleanup will make it a personal mission to clear it all in record time.
My trapdoor snail is so cool! Definitely more cautious than my mystery snail, but I'm sure he'll warm up. My other algae-eating fish greatly appreciated the algae covering his shell when he arrived LOL. Shipping was fast, the snails were well-packaged, and I found TWO baby snails with this guy as a bonus!
Snails were packed individually in water and it was much better than other companies I have ordered from. Every snail was lively right out of the bag! Shells were perfect, no pitting or cracks. Ordered 2 Japanese trapdoor snails. I got a male and female. They had babies already! Had about 15 baby snails and saw the live birth. So cool! Snails clean my tank so well.
I've only had these snails and bladder snails for several days and it is too early to tell how things are going. From what I see so far, the snails are actively scouring the aquarium glass and substrate for food and algae. I am pleased to see this and hope the behavior continues!
