Commonly known as the Kubotai Rasbora or Neon Green Rasbora, the Microdevario kubotai is a breathtaking addition to the modern aquarium. This species is world-renowned for its translucent, electric-green body that seems to glow under high-quality aquarium lighting. As one of the few truly green freshwater aquarium fish, they are a top choice for aquascaping enthusiasts who want a schooling fish that complements the lush colors of a planted tank.
Quick Stats
-
Scientific Name: Microdevario kubotai (formerly Microrasbora kubotai)
-
Care Level: Easy to Intermediate
-
Temperament: Peaceful, active, and social
-
Lifespan: 3 to 5 years
-
Max Size: 0.75 to 1 inch
Place of Origin
The Neon Green Rasbora is native to the river basins of Southeast Asia, primarily found in the Ranong Province of Thailand and parts of Myanmar. They naturally inhabit crystal-clear, slow-moving forest streams and headwaters characterized by high oxygen levels and heavy peripheral vegetation.
Ideal Environment & Tank Size
Because of their high energy and schooling nature, a minimum tank size of 10 gallons is recommended. They are most comfortable—and most visible—when kept in groups of 8 to 12 or more.
-
Substrate & Decor: To make their neon green color "pop," a dark substrate is highly recommended. They thrive in heavily planted tanks with plenty of open swimming space in the center.
-
Water Flow: They prefer a gentle to moderate current and high water quality. Consistent filtration and regular water changes are key to maintaining their vibrant glow.
-
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72°F to 80°F
-
pH: 6.0 – 7.0
-
Hardness: 2–10 dGH
-
Feeding & Diet
The Kubotai Rasbora is an omnivore and a micro-predator in the wild. In the home aquarium, they are not picky but require small-sized food due to their tiny mouths.
-
Primary Diet: High-quality crushed flakes, micro-pellets, or powdered nano-fish foods.
-
Conditioning: They will show their best colors when supplemented with live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or cyclops.
Compatible Tank Mates
These are exceptionally peaceful aquarium fish and are the gold standard for community nano setups.
-
Best Mates: Other small, peaceful species like Chili Rasboras, Celestial Pearl Danios, Ember Tetras, and Sparkling Gouramis. They are also considered shrimp-safe for most adult Neocaridina and Caridina species.
-
Avoid: Large or aggressive tank mates that may outcompete them for food or view these tiny rasboras as a snack.
Breeding the Neon Green Rasbora
Breeding Microdevario kubotai is possible for dedicated hobbyists but requires attention to detail.
-
Preparation: Set up a separate breeding tank with a dark bottom and plenty of fine-leafed plants or spawning mops.
-
Spawning: They are egg-scatterers. In a well-maintained school, they may spawn frequently, dropping tiny, non-adhesive eggs among the plants.
-
Care: Like most small cyprinids, they have no parental instincts and will eat their own eggs. Remove the adults immediately after spawning is observed.
-
Fry: The fry are microscopic and will need infusoria or specialized liquid fry food for the first week before moving up to baby brine shrimp.
